You may think having to get a sports physical is more of a hassle than its worth but we feel it is important for you to know why you are required to have one and why they are so beneficial.

First things first:  What is a sports physical?

According to Kidshealth.com sports physicals are considered pre preparation physical examinations (PPE). There are two parts to a sports physical: medical history and the physical exam.

The medical history portion will usually include:

  • Questions of your personal medical history
  • Illnesses you may have or had (asthma, diabetes, etc.)
  • Past surgeries
  • Current or previous medications, etc.

The physical exam portion will usually include:

  • A record of your height and weight
  • Blood pressure
  • Test your vision
  • Check your heart, lungs, abdomen, etc.

So, why are they so important?

  • They can help you find out if you have any underlining medical conditions that may cause difficulties during your participation in the chosen sport.
  • The doctor may be able to pinpoint some specific injuries that can occur with the certain sport you will be participating in & then provide you with some helpful preventative tips.
  • You will feel good knowing more about your health and your body!

Important tips:

  • In the state of Missouri, you are required to have a new sports physical every 12-18 months (Check with your school for their particular requirements).
  • You should get it done six weeks prior to the beginning of your sports season.
  • Fewer than one percent of students have conditions that will prevent them from participating in sports.
  • It is still important to get a regular physical yearly (yes, there is a difference between a regular physical and a sports physical).

In the state of Missouri you are required to have a MSHSAA form completed by your doctor at the time of your physical exam in order to be eligible to participate in your sport.

If you are wondering where to get this form;

SouthLocationFamily Medical Walk-In Clinics are a network of independent urgent care clinics, in and around Springfield Missouri, created to offer walk-in treatment of unplanned, but non-emerrgent, illness and injury and work related services. We have taken our service away from the hospital campus to the neighborhoods of our patients. This has allowed us to develop a cost effective delivery model that brings the charge for services very close to the actual cost of providing the service. We now have locations in north and south Springfield, Nixa, Ozark, and Republic.
