Hangovers: Helpful Tips :)

Hangover cures_277_20080826Family Medical Walk-In Clinic wants to wish everyone a very Happy New Years and Decade!
If you went out last night hopefully you followed some of our safety tips from yesterdays blog!

We thought we must follow-up and do a piece dedicated to hangovers, almost everyone is always looking for remedies to help them out after a night out on the town.

So, we have put together a few hangover tips to help you start your New Years off feeling great mentally and physically!

According to Forbes.com they stand by these ten “tried and true”  hangover cures:

  1. Water: it is best to drink H2O in between enjoying a cocktail but if you forget; drink lots of it the next morning
  2. Sport drinks: when drinking not only do you lose water, you also lose electrolytes.  Sport drinks help replenish your body
  3. Vitamins B6 & B12: these supplements can help speed your recovery, not recommended for everyday use though
  4. Over-the-counter pain relievers: these will help weed off those miserable headaches (Excedrin has an extra perk, caffeine!)
  5. Prickly Pear: a species of cacti–this will help a few hangover symptoms such as nausea, dry mouth and loss of appetite. (Check your nearest supplement store for this vitamin)
  6. Berocca:  contains vitamins B, C, magnesium, zinc, assorted salts and sugars (no longer sold in the U.S.- check Ebay!)
  7. Rosiglitazone: this helps boost your glucose levels (it is not sold over the counter) so you must have a prescription.
  8. Tripe Soup: made from a cow’s stomach lining (alright, how desperate are you to feel better?!) They swear by it in Mexico.
  9. Haejangguk: “soup for the stomach” a famous Korean soup, made with various ingredients- cow bones and cow blood are main ingredients though- yum!
  10. Hair of the dog: it is actually recommended to take a sip of alcohol the next morning to help nip your hangover in the behind (who really wants to see a drink, let alone take a sip of one after a long night?!)

If you are not willing to try any of these ten “tried and true” remedies our best advice for you is:  SLEEP!

We would love to hear your comments after you try or if you have already tried one of these remedies!!!

Interesting facts from Doc Gurley:

  • Approximately 20-30% of the population is resistant to hangovers (whose jealous?!)
  • Do you know your considered a binge drinker if you have four or more drinks in one evening?
  • Research shows, the darker the drink, the more likely you’ll get a migraine
  • Eating asparagus the next day may help less intensify your hangover
